"Horses" is the debut studio album by American musician Patti Smith, released by Arista Records on November 10, 1975. A key figure in New York City's mid-1970s underground rock scene, Smith signed with Arista in 1975 and recorded "Horses" with her band at Electric Lady Studios during August and September of that year, enlisting former Velvet Underground member John Cale as the producer.
The music on "Horses" reflects the minimalist aesthetic of the emerging punk rock genre. Smith and her band created the album's songs using simple chord progressions, while also incorporating improvisation and elements from avant-garde and other musical styles, diverging from traditional punk. Smith's lyrics draw from her personal experiences, especially those involving her family, as well as more imaginative and fantastical themes. The album includes adaptations of the rock standards "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances."
Upon its release, "Horses" achieved modest commercial success, reaching the top 50 on the American Billboard 200 albums chart, and was widely acclaimed by music critics. Recognized as a seminal recording in punk and subsequent rock movements, "Horses" has frequently been listed among the greatest albums of all time. In 2009, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry as a work that is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
