"White Pony," the third studio album by American alternative metal icons Deftones, graced the airwaves on June 20, 2000, courtesy of Maverick Records. Produced by Terry Date, known for his work on the band's preceding albums "Adrenaline" (1995) and "Around the Fur" (1997), the album's recording sessions unfolded between August and December 1999, spanning locations such as Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood and The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, California.
This album marked a significant evolution in the band's sonic landscape, melding influences from post-hardcore, trip-hop, shoegaze, progressive rock, and post-rock into their signature alternative metal sound. "White Pony" also witnessed the full-time inclusion of Frank Delgado, contributing turntables and synthesizer, elevating their musical palette. Notably, it was the debut of Chino Moreno's rhythmic guitar contributions within the band.
From its inception and through retrospective lenses, "White Pony" garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning recognition as one of the band's most mature endeavors to date. Boasting two successful singles, "Change (In the House of Flies)" and "Back to School (Mini Maggit)," alongside the promotional single "Digital Bath," the album also secured the prestigious 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with the track "Elite." In celebration of its 20th anniversary, "White Pony" received a deluxe reissue in December 2020, accompanied by "Black Stallion," a remix album offering a fresh perspective on the timeless classics.
